Though comprised of two smaller books, the Book of Ezra and Nehemiah were joined together as they both discuss the birth of the Second Temple period. While some of the recorded events occur in the Persian Empire, the book's focus is the return of the Jewish exiles to the Land of Israel.
The primary events involve Ezra, “a scribe expert in the Teaching of Moses” (Ezra 7:6), who brings a second wave of returnees to the land of Israel. Nechemya follows thirteen years later.
Ezra focuses on combating assimilation, promoting Jewish education, and reestablishing a proper Torah-based justice system. Nechemya concentrates on physically reestablishing Jewish communities and reconstructing the fortifications of Jerusalem. Both aspects were essential for the survival of the nation.
All twenty-four books of the Hebrew Bible relate to the Land of Israel, but this is the only one that’s dedicated to the rejuvenation of the Land and its people, and the observance of the Bible’s laws.
