Beyond the Green Line: Discovering Israel's Ancient Heartland
Have you ever wondered what lies beyond the headlines in Judea and Samaria? While most tourists stick to the familiar sites of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, the real story of our biblical heritage unfolds in the hills of Samaria, where every vista tells a story from Tanach and every community represents a modern miracle of Jewish determination. Israel365 is offering an extraordinary opportunity during Yeshiva week for American Jews to explore this vital region, where 70% of the Torah's events unfolded. On Monday, January 20th, a bulletproof bus will transport participants through ancient pathways and modern settlements, providing rare access to places most Jews never see – yet places that hold the key to Israel's security and Jewish destiny.
These are places most Jews never visit – yet they are the very roots of our history and key to Israel's future. By participating in this tour, visitors not only gain deep insights into our heritage but also strengthen the dedicated Jewish pioneers who have established thriving communities in these strategic locations.
The journey begins at Peduel, aptly nicknamed "the balcony of Israel." From this vantage point in western Samaria, visitors can grasp the strategic significance of Judea and Samaria while taking in breathtaking views of Israel's coastal plain – from Ashkelon through Tel Aviv and, on clear days, all the way to Haifa. This panoramic view encompasses the region where 75% of Israel's population and industry are concentrated.
The tour continues to the acclaimed Tura Winery in Rechalim, whose establishment carries deep historical significance. The community was founded in memory of two Rachels – Rachel Weiss, who perished with her three children in a 1988 terror attack, and Rachel Druck, who was murdered in 1992. Their deaths in the month of Cheshvan share timing with our foremother Rachel's passing, adding layers of meaning to the location's spiritual significance.
A highlight of the trip is the Mount Cabir lookout at Elon Moreh, offering panoramic views of Shechem, Mount Gerizim, and Mount Ebal. Here, participants can visualize the path our forefathers took during Joshua's time, when six tribes ascended Mount Gerizim for blessings and six ascended Mount Ebal for the curses. The site gained additional significance in the 1980s with the discovery of Joshua's altar, one of the most important archaeological finds in all of Israel.
The journey includes lunch at Givot Olam in Itamar, featuring dairy products from the region's organic farms. From the nearby Three Seas lookout, visitors can glimpse three of Israel's major bodies of water – the Mediterranean Sea, the Kinneret, and the Dead Sea – a rare perspective on the breadth of our Biblical inheritance.
The tour concludes at Gilad Farm, a community that embodies the pioneering spirit of modern settlement. Established in memory of Gilad Zar, the former Samaria security chief murdered in 2001, the community grew despite initial lack of infrastructure, now housing nearly 100 families. Their perseverance eventually led to government recognition, though it came at the devastating cost of losing their rabbi, Raziel Shevach, in a 2018 terror attack.
The tour departs from the Inbal Hotel in Jerusalem at 9:30 AM and returns at 7:00 PM. The cost is 350 NIS per person, including a kosher l'mehadrin dairy lunch. Participants are advised to bring water bottles and dress warmly.
